Really? You know discrimination like the back of your hand? Then you would have actually read my initial post and seen that this has nothing to do with gay marriage. Salvation Army discriminates against gays. It’s that simple. There’s no “may or may not be true” about it. It is a fact. They’ve discriminated against gays in hiring, urged gays to “embrace celibacy as a way of life”, lobbied against the repeal of anti-gay laws, and rescinded domestic benefits for gay employees.
Okay, so your town doesn’t have Goodwill, et al, but does your town have the internet? You can donate online to charities. Everyone has a choice as to where their charitable donations go; there is absolutely no need to give to any organization that supports discrimination.
See sites like Charity Navigator to find and vet organizations yourself.
I’m not denying that they don’t descriminate. I said it may or may or may not be true. It probably is, but that doesn’t give people a reason to stop donating to them. I realize I can donate online. However how would that support my local homeless people? That’s what I was talking about. In small towns the only thing homeless people have is the salvation army. If enough people see this and dont donate to their small town salvation armys then their local homeless people will go Christmas eve without anything to eat.
And how does me knowing discrimination have anything to do with you thinking I thought it was about gay marriage? The only reason I said gay Marriage was to show that half believe in something and half doesn’t. I also said about spanking children and abortion and your post has nothing to do with that. In my original thing I said “I personally believe in gay rights”. Meaning I understood it wasn’t about gay marriage. But I guess you didn’t see that one.
I mean basically it comes down to whose needs are more important?
Gay, Lesbians, Bisexuals? or Homeless people?
I choose the latter. The first ones are discriminated against but atleast have necessities in life. The latter are discriminated against and don’t have simple necessities.
A little deductive logic:
A: All homeless are mammals
B: Some mammals are human
C: LGBT are humans
Therefore some LGBT are homeless.
If you’re looking to give to a local charity - I’m sure you could find plenty of other places - soup kitchens, local churches, local schools, your grocery store - etc that are also helping at this time and give them some donation of food, clothing, etc. It doesn’t have to be monetary. It doesn’t have to be to an international organization - Salvation Army isn’t an American organization — Review its origins on its own website.
I mean, don’t you live in Connecticut?
No I do not live in Connecticut. And I know that it’s not American ran. It’s private owned. I never claimed it was. I just know that they have done a lot of good things for people. People that I have seen personally benefit from them. My brother is a local police officer and the salvation army is the first place on their list to take a homeless person that needs food/ a warm place. I’m not worried about where I’m donating. I know where my donations go monthly divided up. I’m worried about this tweet effecting people putting their change in the red buckets to help people in towns where those other organizations don’t exist. And you’re right there are homeless people that are LGBT. So it works both ways. Do you want them to starve when Salvation army can’t afford to feed people because of tweets like this? Why do people want to destroy good things for their fault? I am against abortion. 100 hundred percent. But I support planned parenthood because they provide free services for women to get on birth control or to receive counseling to take care of a baby or free gynecological services, etc. I am not going to hate planned parenthood for that one fault. Because I choose to look at the good in them. They don’t have the same views as me, but they do good and I learned to accept that. I support the LGBT community. But I’m not going to hate salvation army for not supporting them. It’s an opinion that differs from mine. That’s just dramatic and very childish to make such a big deal about things and not accept others opinions. If you seem to want to be so accepting of the LGBT community, why can’t you support others opinions that clash with yours? I’m not arguing anymore after this, I made my point. No i do not live in connecticut. No I do not have other local shelters. And no many towns around me don’t either. And if we all gave our money to the places elsewhere. What would happen to the homeless in these small towns where there are nothing else but salvation armies?
I may not be gay, but I do know discrimination like the back of my hand for something else. Half of America believes in gay marriage and half doesn’t. Half believes in abortion and half doesn’t. Half believe in spanking children, half doesnt. Nobody should be punished at the hands of somebody elses faulty belief system, especially the homeless. As far as those other charities. They come nothing close to what salvation army has done. We don’t have a local homeless shelter or soup kitchen outside of the salvation army. Many small towns don’t. Feeding America, Goodwill, ConAgra, they don’t exist around here. Habitat for Humanity are few and far between and they don’t provide homes for people that are eating out of trashcans. The Salvation army has been around since the 1800s, helping many many people get off the streets and overcome their addictions. I would hate to see it trashed over some stupid tweet that may or may not be true and if it is shouldn’t effect how people donate to the people uninvolved.

As Xmas draws near you’re likely to hear those Salvation Army bells a jinglin’. And like many folks—mom—you think hey! Charitable organization! Holiday cheer! Sure, I’ll drop you some bills, friend. Don’t. Well, I mean, do as you please, but if you’re a gay rights champion, then it would behoove you not to support these homophobic d-bags.
Salvation Army has been headlining gay news sites for years ‘round about this time, and for good reason, discriminating against gays in hiring, urging homos to “embrace celibacy as a way of life”, lobbying against the repeal of anti-gay laws, and rescinding domestic benefits for gay employees.

I guess this tweet should’ve said “ho-ho-homophobic.”
I don’t think that’s really the main point of anything. Whether they’re “homophobic” or not. I personally support the rights to benefits for gay couples. But if people stop supporting them then a lot of homeless people aren’t going to have someplace warm to stay on Christmas eve. Or a meal on Christmas day. They do a lot for the community whether people like to believe it or not. See the big picture people. Salvation Army is a Christian run organization therefore yes they may have some very conservative views that don’t match with others. But the debate on gay marriage is just that, a debate. And people have different views. But that doesn’t give you a reason to stop giving them money, and punishing the people that have nothing to do with it. It’s just wrong.
I hate to start an argument, but here’s my thinking:
As heterosexuals, we have the privilege of being able to overlook Salvation Army’s discriminatory policies. The people against whom Salvation Army discriminates do not. I absolutely agree that helping the homeless is important, but I don’t think that should have to come at the expense of gay rights—nor does it have to. There are plenty of non-discriminatory alternatives to Salvation Army, some secular, some not. Why not donate to Goodwill, ConAgra Foods, Feeding America, Habitat for Humanity, or your local soup kitchen or homeless shelter instead?

Guy: I ran over your cat.
Girl: All those books I won’t let you read are love poems about you.
Girl: I act like an idiot, because I have a void in my heart.
Guy: I believe death is a beautiful part of life.
Guy: I’ve been telling people I have a real job but I moved out here so they wouldn’t think I was pathetic.
Mine? I’m 22 and I say I’ve never been involved with a guy for many different reasons. But the real reason is, because nobody wants me.
Does anyone have any secrets they want to share?
